EL PASO -- Elder Otis Durr does not mince his words as he preaches about how people treat others.
"We were created in the image of God and you are all God's people. And you deserve to be treated with the same respect given everyone else," he said, standing at a pulpit in a small, run-down but clean business that was once a restaurant.
It is another typical Sunday service for Durr at Damascus Ministries on Myrtle Street. But it is not a typical group of Christians that takes in his message and says "amen" to his compelling words.
This is a group of men and some women who have no place to call home. They are homeless because of mental illness, because of drug addiction, because they come from dysfunctional families or because they have, they admit, made bad decisions.
Some say they stay in shelters, while others prefer to live on the streets, where they make their own rules.
But on any Saturday or Sunday morning, about 45 to 50 people fill the small building, knowing they can be fed both spiritually and physically by Durr and a handful of volunteers.
